Building and Staffing Temples (The Baseline)

Here is how to establish your religious baseline:

• Start Small with Shrines: In the early game, you cannot afford grand temples. Build small Shrines for Jupiter, Ceres, Mars, Mercury, and Neptune near your residential zones. This prevents their anger meters from dropping into the red zone early on.
• Upgrade to Temples: As your city transitions to Equites and Patricians, shrines will no longer be enough. You must construct large, expensive Temples. These require significant amounts of Stone and Marble.
• Ensure Priest Coverage: A Temple is useless if it is empty. Temples require educated workers (Priests). You must ensure your city has functioning schools and a high enough desirability rating to attract the educated class, otherwise, your temples will sit unstaffed, and the gods will grant no favor.
• Desirability Radius: Temples cast a massive positive Desirability aura. Always place them strategically near upscale housing to boost property values while simultaneously appeasing the deity.

Hosting Festivals and Sacrifices (The Boost)

Simply having temples will only keep the gods “Neutral.” If you want them to actively bless your city (e.g., Ceres granting double harvests, or Mercury boosting trade ship speeds), you must spend resources to throw Festivals.

How to execute a successful festival:

1. Build a Grand Forum or Colosseum: You need a physical location to host the event. A basic city square works early on, but grander venues yield more divine favor.
2. Access the Religion Tab: Open your Religion UI overlay and check which god currently has the lowest favor.
3. Allocate the Resources: Select “Host Festival.” You will have to choose the size of the festival. A small festival might just cost a few hundred Denarii and some Meat. A Grand Festival requires thousands of Denarii, copious amounts of Wine, and exotic goods.
4. Time it Right: Do not host a festival to Ceres in the middle of winter. Time your festivals right before you need their specific blessing—like throwing a festival for Mars right before you dispatch your legions.

• Rotate the Festivals: Never host back-to-back festivals for the same deity. Keep a mental checklist or use the UI overlay to rotate your celebrations evenly across all gods every in-game year.
• Equal Real Estate: Do not build a massive, marble-clad Grand Temple for Venus while leaving Neptune with a dirt-floor shrine. Try to keep the architectural tiers of your religious buildings relatively equal across the board.
• The Emergency Sacrifice: If a god’s icon turns red and starts flashing (indicating an imminent disaster), drop everything and host a small festival for them immediately. It will cost you resources, but it is infinitely cheaper than rebuilding a lightning-struck Senate.
