How to Change Matchmaking Region in Toxic Commando | XMODhub

Guide by XMODhub on how to change matchmaking regions in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, showing gameplay of soldiers fighting a large monster.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is a blast when you have a full squad of four, but fighting the Sludge God alone with AI bots because your regional server is empty can ruin the 80s action experience. During the launch window, many PC and console players are complaining about high ping (latency), rubberbanding, or dead matchmaking pools, desperately looking for a way to manually change their server region.

Because Saber Interactive’s Swarm Engine utilizes an automated, ping-based matchmaking architecture via Epic Online Services (EOS) and the PROS network, there isn’t a simple “Server Browser” list to choose from in the main menu.

In this guide, we will explain exactly how the game assigns your server, answer whether the game is region-locked, and show you how to force the engine to change your matchmaking routing.

Our technical team has analyzed the Swarm Engine’s network traffic during launch week. We confirmed that the game aggressively auto-routes you to the server with the lowest millisecond (ms) ping. If you are trying to play with friends in Europe while you are in North America, you cannot just select a UI toggle to change regions. Read “Method 1” carefully to understand how the Party Host dictates your dedicated server!

Quick Answer: How to Change Your Matchmaking Region

(Stuck in a dead region or experiencing infinite matchmaking queues? Follow these exact steps to trick the system.)

  1. Check In-Game Network Settings: Go to Options > Network. If a “Preferred Region” dropdown exists in the latest patch, change it from “Auto” to your desired region (e.g., EU Central or NA East).
  2. Use the Party Host Trick: The Swarm Engine server is chosen based on the Lobby Host’s physical location. To play on an EU server, have your EU friend host the party and invite you.
  3. Boot a Gaming VPN: If playing solo, close the game, connect a VPN optimized for UDP traffic to a high-population node (like US West), and relaunch the game.
  4. Enable Crossplay: If you cannot find PC players locally, turn Crossplay ON to merge your matchmaking pool with PS5 and Xbox players.
  5. Restart the PROS Connection: Log out of the PROS network in the main menu and log back in to refresh your geolocation matchmaking token.

Is Toxic Commando Region Locked? (Steam vs Epic)

One of the most frequently asked questions is whether the game enforces a strict region lock, or if buying the game on Steam vs Epic Games separates the player base.

The short answer is: No, the game is not strictly region-locked, and all storefronts share the same servers. You are free to invite friends from any country using the in-game Crossplay code system or your friend list. However, Toxic Commando utilizes a “Soft-Region Lock”. This means when you search for a public game via Quickplay, the algorithm heavily prioritizes putting you in lobbies with players under 80ms ping to ensure smooth physics calculations. If your local region is unpopulated, you might experience infinite matchmaking queues rather than being automatically tossed into a laggy overseas lobby.

Dedicated Servers vs. P2P: How Routing Works

To bypass regional restrictions, you must understand the Swarm Engine’s hybrid networking. When you play Toxic Commando, the game uses Saber Interactive’s global Dedicated Servers (usually AWS/EOS nodes) to host the actual Horde mechanics. However, the connection between your squadmates often relies on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) handshakes. If the AWS node closest to you is down, the game forcefully routes your P2P squad to the next closest active server, which can instantly spike your ping from 30ms to 150ms.

Method 1: The Party Leader Trick (Playing Overseas)

If you are trying to play with international friends without lag, you must manipulate the dedicated server assignment.

  • The Host Dictates the Server: The server region is entirely determined by the player who creates the squad.
  • If you live in New York (NA East) and invite three friends from London (EU West), the game will spin up an NA East server. Your three friends will experience high ping and rubberbanding.

The Solution: To change the region to favor the majority, you must change the Party Leader. Dissolve the squad. Have one of the London players host the lobby and invite the NA player. The server will now be hosted in EU West.

Method 2: Using a Gaming VPN for Solo Matchmaking

What if you are a solo player stuck in a region where matchmaking is taking forever at 3:00 AM? Since you don’t have an international friend to host for you, you must spoof your ping routing.

  1. Completely exit Toxic Commando and close your launcher.
  2. Open a reliable Gaming VPN (like ExitLag, NordVPN, or ExpressVPN). Ensure it is optimized for UDP game traffic, not just TCP web browsing.
  3. Connect to a server node in a highly populated region (e.g., Frankfurt, Germany, or Los Angeles, USA).
  4. Relaunch the game. The Swarm Engine’s initial ping check will now believe you are physically located in that new region and instantly place you in those populated matchmaking pools.

Advanced Fix: Strict NAT Types & Port Forwarding

If you have successfully changed your region using a VPN or the Party Leader trick but are still getting randomly disconnected, your router likely has a Strict NAT Type. This blocks the P2P handshake required for co-op.

How to open your ports:

  1. Log into your router’s admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1).
  2. Navigate to the Port Forwarding / UPnP section.
  3. Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) to let the game open ports dynamically.
  4. Alternatively, manually forward the Epic Online Services (EOS) required ports: TCP 80, 443 and UDP 3478, 3479, 4379, 4380.

Once you have manipulated your region, bypassed the strict NAT types, and finally connected with a full squad of players, you might realize you lack the heavy firepower needed to survive “Nightmare” difficulty with high ping.

Conclusion: Global Carnage

Being region-locked into empty servers or dealing with unplayable ping when joining overseas friends can ruin an amazing co-op shooter. By understanding the “Soft-Region Lock”, utilizing the Party Host routing method, forwarding your ports, and using a Gaming VPN for solo play, you can take full control of your Toxic Commando matchmaking region.
